DECEMBER 8-13 -- Really Busy Swim Week

I had a lot of fun skating with you.  You are a good bunch of kids.  I hope no one got hurt!  I saw (and heard) some hard falls. It sounds like the dinner was a big success too.  For those of you who missed it - you have a present waiting for you.  Joslin Wright will have them at the meet on Tuesday to give to you.  Remember NOT to wash them in the dishwasher - they will melt!

This week is crazy.  We have 3 meets!  (Who planned THAT?)  Here is the schedule:
  • Normal practice schedule
  • Monday 12/8: Dinner in the Commons at EAST after practice
  • Tuesday 12/9:  Hillcrest(5A), Bonneville(4A), Rowland Hall(2A) @ EAST - HOME meet - Best dress at school
  • Wednesday 12/10: Dinner at the Wright's house (1392 Canterbury Dr) after practice
  • Thursday 12/11: Herriman(5A), Stansbury(3A), Rowland Hall(2A) @ EAST - HOME meet - Best dress at school
  • Saturday 12/13: Park City Invite (2465 West Kilby Road, Park City) - BUS at 6:45AM at the usual spot
    • Bus snacks provided by Hank Thompson family
    • Dinner/late lunch at The Pie - University basement location
As usual, all meets are required, and count double.  PLEASE let me know ahead of time if you cannot attend.
As a challenge to the JV swimmers - I'd like you to pick an event that you haven't swam in a meet before to enter in one (or both) of our HOME meets this week.  Varsity-Invited swimmers should continue to practice their best events.  Varsity swimmers should finish up events on their list this week at our home meets, and enter the events they care most about in Park City.

The Park City meet has an entry fee for each swimmer, which the school will pay, but I don't like to pay for swimmers who don't show up! Entries are due for that meet on Tuesday, so I must know of conflicts before then.  This meet will have teams from across the state 5A, 4A, 3A & 2A, most of them we have not, and will not, swim against at any other time, or not until the state meet.

Swimmers of the Meet

Swimmers of the meet last week against Kearns!  Kearns is one of the top teams in 4A, so it is always a tough meet.  We had some trouble, and learned some things.  First - swimmers need to make more effort to stay warm.  At a pool like Kearns, warm-up jackets and pants are necessary.  It is also important to wear flip-flops, sandals, or shoes.  The deck out there was freezing, making it very hard to stay warm without something on your feet.  Shivering uses a TON of energy that would be better spent in your race!  The Park CIty pool can be freezing too - bring warm clothes and wear something on your feet!!  Second - staying positive is a TEAM effort.  It's a lot more fun to win, but it is still possible to swim well, when you concentrate on your race and your teammates are cheering for you!

We had some great results.  The women's 400 free relay was really exciting!  They dropped their time by 4 seconds and won a very close race!  There were some really good individual results too.  The girls' swimmer of the meet was Nicole Sullivan.  She dropped her time in the 100 free by 11.57 seconds!  She dropped her time in the 50 free by 5.55 seconds!  Nice work!  The guys' swimmer of the meet went to two swimmers.  Ryan Pratt improved a lot in his two events, dropping 5.9 seconds in his 100 free, and 1.58 in his 50 free.  Great!  However, Ryan wasn't at practice Friday morning, so Jackson Keller won the cap.  Jackson also had a great meet dropping nearly a second in both the 100 breast, and the 100 free with a 59.54, breaking a minute for the first time!!  That is a milestone barrier that is fun to break!

Congratulations to those swimmers!  Who will it be this week??
