December 29 - January 2 -- Reminder for this week!

Happy New Year Everyone!!

This is a repeat reminder for this week...

REMEMBER your attendance counts over the holiday break!! If you are not at 85% on January 15, you will not be able to attend the Cedar City Meet with the team. Several of you are now below 85%. There will be a couple of make-up opportunities in January, but not enough to pull your percentage up much. Coming twice on Mondays also works as a make-up for all but the varsity swimmers.

Attendance:
  • 100%+: Allison, Maddie, Meghan, Mary, Griffin
  • 93-99%: Mei, Eden, Kanna, Lauren, Ally, Madeline, Jamie, Katy, Stephanie, Jessie, Nicole, Jackson, Alex, Dylan, Jack, James, Cameron, Travis
  • 85-92%: Sam, Ainu, Dana, Abbey, Emma, Noah, Daxton, Rob, Jared, Nick, Zach, Ryan, Hank, Nathan (Be careful - could slip below 85%)
  • <85%: Olivia, Chiharu, Wendy, Adam (need make-ups - DON'T miss!!)

Anyone whose attendance percentage is below about 92% is vulnerable over this break. The more excused absences you have had, the more careful you must be since your percentage will fall faster. The practice schedule is detailed below. Make careful note of the times.

This Week (12/29-1/3):
  • 12/29 Monday:  Practices (BOTH for varsity, ONE for all others) 7-8:30AM and 3-4:30PM
  • 12/30 Tuesday: Practice 8-9:30AM (notice this one is different!)
  • 12/31 Wednesday:  7-8:30AM Varsity AND 3-4:30PM Friends and Family Meet!! ALL family members, alumni and East Swimming friends are invited to participate.  Spread the word! Holiday treats afterward
  • 1/1 Thursday - HAPPY NEW YEAR!  Moratorium - no practice
  • 1/2 Friday: Practice 7-8:30AM
Our Friends And Family Meet on Wednesday afternoon, New Years Eve!, counts as a normal practice (not double like other meets). Families are encouraged to participate and celebrate the New Year with us! Team members are expected to swim 2 events and as many relays as you want with your family and friends. We will have treats afterwards. Events will be: 200 Medley Relay, 50 Free, 50 Breast, 100 IM, 50 Back, 50 Fly, 200 Free Relay.

DECEMBER 22 - JANUARY 2 -- Happy Holidays!!

I hope you all have a great Christmas and holiday break!

This week we have NO practices except Friday 12/26 (7-8:30am).We had another good meet last Thursday. I think (hope) we have four individual state qualifiers now: Nathan Van Buren in the 100 Breast, Katy Mayer in the 500 Free, Ainu Kaufusi in the 100 Breast, and Meghan Rainier in a bunch of events. Plus, I am pretty confident that we have, or will qualify, all three of the girls relays!! YAY! We have several more swimmers who are right on the edge of qualifying, as well as all the boys relays, but times will probably still need to come down.

Our swimmers of the meet last week were Nicole Sullivan for dropping 8 seconds on her breaststroke and Jared Hunt for breaking that 1 minute barrier in his 100 free leading off the relay, after clocking a 1:00.00 in his individual event. Nice job!

REMEMBER your attendance counts over the holiday break!! If you are not at 85% on January 15, you will not be able to attend the Cedar City Meet with the team. Several of you are below 85% now. There will be a couple of make-up opportunities in January, but not enough to pull your percentage up much. Coming twice on Mondays also works as a make-up for all but the varsity swimmers. Relays' times came down.  I think we are in pretty good shape heading into the Christmas break!

DECEMBER 11, 2014 -- PARK CITY INVITATIONAL MEET UPDATE!

Our warm up time for the Park City Invitational is 7:30-8:00am - SO, the bus is now scheduled for 6:30am on Saturday.  It will pick us up at the usual place at East.
Remember to bring warm-ups and flip flops or something for your feet.  They are opening additional locker rooms down the hall from the lobby. There will be some breakfast type snacks on the bus and there has been a concession stand in the lobby in past years.  The time line has the meet lasting until 2pm - so you will all be hungry for pizza at the Pie afterwards.  Swimmers bring $5.00 towards pizza and the team will pick-up the remainder.

The Park City team is collecting toys. They would be happy for any donations.  See flyer below.

Parents, East is asked to supply 2 timers for lane 8 at the meet.  Please fill in if able.

The meet starts at 8:45 am.  The address is 2465 West Kilby Rd., Park City at the Ecker Hill Middle School.

Go EAST!

DECEMBER 8-13 -- Really Busy Swim Week

I had a lot of fun skating with you.  You are a good bunch of kids.  I hope no one got hurt!  I saw (and heard) some hard falls. It sounds like the dinner was a big success too.  For those of you who missed it - you have a present waiting for you.  Joslin Wright will have them at the meet on Tuesday to give to you.  Remember NOT to wash them in the dishwasher - they will melt!

This week is crazy.  We have 3 meets!  (Who planned THAT?)  Here is the schedule:
  • Normal practice schedule
  • Monday 12/8: Dinner in the Commons at EAST after practice
  • Tuesday 12/9:  Hillcrest(5A), Bonneville(4A), Rowland Hall(2A) @ EAST - HOME meet - Best dress at school
  • Wednesday 12/10: Dinner at the Wright's house (1392 Canterbury Dr) after practice
  • Thursday 12/11: Herriman(5A), Stansbury(3A), Rowland Hall(2A) @ EAST - HOME meet - Best dress at school
  • Saturday 12/13: Park City Invite (2465 West Kilby Road, Park City) - BUS at 6:45AM at the usual spot
    • Bus snacks provided by Hank Thompson family
    • Dinner/late lunch at The Pie - University basement location
As usual, all meets are required, and count double.  PLEASE let me know ahead of time if you cannot attend.
As a challenge to the JV swimmers - I'd like you to pick an event that you haven't swam in a meet before to enter in one (or both) of our HOME meets this week.  Varsity-Invited swimmers should continue to practice their best events.  Varsity swimmers should finish up events on their list this week at our home meets, and enter the events they care most about in Park City.

The Park City meet has an entry fee for each swimmer, which the school will pay, but I don't like to pay for swimmers who don't show up! Entries are due for that meet on Tuesday, so I must know of conflicts before then.  This meet will have teams from across the state 5A, 4A, 3A & 2A, most of them we have not, and will not, swim against at any other time, or not until the state meet.

Swimmers of the Meet

Swimmers of the meet last week against Kearns!  Kearns is one of the top teams in 4A, so it is always a tough meet.  We had some trouble, and learned some things.  First - swimmers need to make more effort to stay warm.  At a pool like Kearns, warm-up jackets and pants are necessary.  It is also important to wear flip-flops, sandals, or shoes.  The deck out there was freezing, making it very hard to stay warm without something on your feet.  Shivering uses a TON of energy that would be better spent in your race!  The Park CIty pool can be freezing too - bring warm clothes and wear something on your feet!!  Second - staying positive is a TEAM effort.  It's a lot more fun to win, but it is still possible to swim well, when you concentrate on your race and your teammates are cheering for you!

We had some great results.  The women's 400 free relay was really exciting!  They dropped their time by 4 seconds and won a very close race!  There were some really good individual results too.  The girls' swimmer of the meet was Nicole Sullivan.  She dropped her time in the 100 free by 11.57 seconds!  She dropped her time in the 50 free by 5.55 seconds!  Nice work!  The guys' swimmer of the meet went to two swimmers.  Ryan Pratt improved a lot in his two events, dropping 5.9 seconds in his 100 free, and 1.58 in his 50 free.  Great!  However, Ryan wasn't at practice Friday morning, so Jackson Keller won the cap.  Jackson also had a great meet dropping nearly a second in both the 100 breast, and the 100 free with a 59.54, breaking a minute for the first time!!  That is a milestone barrier that is fun to break!

Congratulations to those swimmers!  Who will it be this week??

Thanks to the Tippets, Buhler, and Price families for breakfasts last week. We LOVE the breakfasts!

Thanks
to the Zach Olson family for bus snacks - even though Zach was too sick to swim!

Thanks to Tippets, Rainier, Sloan, Hopson, Service, Swanson, and Wright families for dinner at the Holiday party!

The holiday break practices are required and count toward your attendance percentage. Anyone who is below 85% on January 13 when entries are due for the Cedar City meet will not be entered, and may not attend with the team Jan 16-17. We might be able to offer a make-up practice in January - but don't count on it. Your attendance is good now. Keep it up!
