Weekly Email:  January 25-29, 2016 -- UPDATE

As if that email wasn't long enough - I forgot a few things!

1st - Peyton is also very close to qualifying for state.  Anything can happen at the region meets! Yikes.

2nd - I forgot to include a couple of pictures from the Highland Invite - take a look!

3rd - I wanted to report on the meets last week:

At the Ogden Invite, it was fun to swim in a new pool, and win so easily. It was a confidence booster.

It was scored as 2 dual meets.  Both of these teams are in our region.

Boys:
  • EAST 130 Ogden 36
  • EAST 117 Bonneville 57
Girls:
  • EAST 122 Ogden 46
  • EAST 110 Bonneville 60

At the Highland Invite, the competition was a little stiffer, with some 5A schools.
  • Boys:  EAST was 5th of 11 teams
  • Girls:  EAST was 6th of 10 teams
  • Combined: EAST was 5th of 11 teams
The swimmers of the meet at the Cedar Invitational were:
Emma Robinson for getting in there with her injury and still swimming

Adam Oveido for driving down to Cedar on his own (with his Dad) even though he was sick, so he could participate on the 2nd day.

Thank you Emma and Adam for being great team members!

The swimmers of the meet at the Ogden meet were:
Ian Ashworth for dropping bunches of time in both of his events:  200 Free -6.89 seconds and the 100 Free -1.39 seconds!

Allison Buhler for dropping time in both of her events AGAIN: 100 Fly -1.88 seconds and the 100 Back -.8 seconds!
Congratulations Ian and Allison!

Take a look at the 4A  top50 (utswimcoach.com) to see where the East swimmers are placed.  Unfortunately, the Highland invite is not included in there, but it still gives a good idea of what the 4A competition is. Pretty tough.

Hang in there everyone!

Weekly Email:  January 25-29, 2016 -- Get Excited for Regions!

Hello Again Everyone –

Our swim season is nearing the end.  This week we will be resting up for the REGION MEET on Friday.  There are some changes to the workouts:
  • MONDAY – Both practices will be held at the usual time but EVERYONE attends only ONE – except Katy, Jack and Meghan are expected at BOTH, AND those who need a make-up to swim at region:  Julius, Zach, Dylan, Hank & Mae
  • TUESDAY is normal
  • WEDNESDAY morning – ONLY Katy, Meghan & Jack
  • WEDNESDAY afternoon – EVERYONE – Swimming, including relay practice, and then a TEAM meeting
  • THURSDAY is normal
  • FRIDAY – no practice, REGION MEET!!
Attendance at practice was pretty dismal last week, leaving several of you off the list of team members in good standing. Only swimmers in good standing are allowed to participate in region and invited to the region dinner. Entries are due on TUESDAY.  There is exactly ONE make-up opportunity (come twice on Monday).

Swimmers eligible for region (85% attendance and above)

Girls:  Allison, Kanna, Maddie, Lauren, Sammy, Ally, Madeline, Busra, Peyton, Jamie, Katy, Chloe, Abbey, Meghan, Jessie, Mary, Eleanor.  Mae needs either a make-up, or doctor’s note for missing last week. Stephanie, Emma, and Madison cannot swim at region because of injury or the UHSAA, but ARE invited to the region dinner

Boys: Ian, Noah, Daxton, Rob, Griffin, Jesper, Jared, Oskar, Jackson, Alex, Adam, Connor, Jack, James, Nathan, Cameron.  Need a make-up to be included: Julius, Zach, Dylan, Hank

If you believe you name has been left off this list in error, please come talk to me in person.

The 4A Region 5 Championship meet is on Friday.  The bus is scheduled to leave East at  7:15am.  Swimmers will be excused from school for the full school day.  East's warm-up is from 8:10-8:50 am.  The meet starts at 9 am.  There is an admission fee for spectators ($6 adults, $4 students, $20 family, under 5 and over 62 are free).  Programs can be purchased for $4.

Things are looking pretty good for our volunteer positions at regions.  We are still in need of someone to help at the entrance table by stamping hands as spectators enter the meet as they pay for their entrance fee.  This volunteer should only be needed until the meet starts when everyone is trying to arrive at the same time.  Please email Jodie (snjswanson@msn.com) if you can help.

For most swimmers, the region meet is the end of the season.  Those who qualify for state, including relay swimmers and alternates will continue, but that is not a sure thing until state entries have been turned in and times are accepted which will become more clear next weekend.

At this time probable individual qualifiers include:  Katy, Meghan, Madeline(?), Jack, Nate, Alex(?), Griffin(?)

Relays look like:  All 3 girls relays, and at least 2 boys relays.  This will increase the state swimmers significantly.

Waiting for state entry validation is a nerve wracking time for these swimmers and coaches!

Thank you to everyone that is helping with the region meet!

January 22, 2016 -- Request for Volunteers

Hi Parents,

I hope everyone has had a great season!  It's hard to believe it is Regions and the last meet for many of our swimmers next week!

The Region meet is on Friday, January 29thEveryone that is qualified swims at the Region Championships.  It is the last chance for our swimmers to qualify for the state meet at BYU on Feb 12 and 13!

As Cathy said in the Sunday email, East is the host and Cathy is the meet Director (adding a lot more stress at this time!).  We will need a few more volunteers this year to help with all of our added duties with being the meet host.  I am hoping to get volunteers of swimmers that are not seniors, as this is the last meet for many of them and I think their parents should have this chance watch them.  If I can please request volunteers from parents with freshman through juniors it would be very helpful.

Below are the positions we need volunteers help with:
  • East is responsible for providing 2 timers in lane 1.  The more volunteers we have the shorter shift you will need to cover, I would like to be able to distribute the shifts into 2 hours each.  The meet begins at 9:00 am and will be over by 1:30 pm, timers will need to be behind the blocks for a timer meeting at 8:40 am.  As many of you know timing is one of the easiest and fun opportunities to help the team, you will have the best view and cheering opportunities for your swimmer at this meet.
  • I will need a volunteer to stand near the locker rooms to direct traffic, be aware of the order of events, and try to keep swimmers who aren’t swimming soon to wait until their event gets closer.  You will need to be ready to help at 8:30 am.
  • I need a volunteer to help stamp hands as spectators enter the meet as they pay for their entrance fee.  I have Randy Philpot and Jeff Bowles (our wonderful coach’s spouse and parent!) selling heat sheets and entrance fees.  This volunteer should only be needed until the meets starts when everyone is trying to come at the same time.  Warm-ups start at 7:30 am and spectators start arriving at this time.  You will need to be ready to help at 7:15 am.
  • I need a few volunteers to help in the hospitality room.  East will provide o.j., water, bagels, and fruit for 80 people (coaches, officials, timers). East will need to shop for food items and provide 2-3 people to help prepare and distribute food at the meet.  Coaches, Officials and Timers are welcome to help themselves during the break after the 50 free. These volunteers will also distribute water to timers/officials at the start of the meet.  You will need to be ready to help at 7:30 am.
  • Merica Hale has volunteered to be the Head Timer.  You will need to be ready for a timer meeting at 8:40 am.
  • Jim Van Buren has volunteered to be the meet Referee.
  • Our own Lindsey Lloyd has volunteered to sing the National Anthem.
  • Cathy and Jodie have volunteered to compile the information for the Programs and many other duties.

Please respond to me (snjswanson@msn.com) if you are available to help with any of these.

Remember the Regions dinner will be held at the Old Spaghetti Factory at Trolley Square Thursday, January 28th at 6:00 pm.  All swimmers who qualify to swim at Regions are invited.  The dinner is provided by the team, swimmers will need money for drinks or special requests.

I want to give a big thank you to all the parents who helped time and officiate at our home meets this year.  We couldn't do it without you!!  Also thanks to all the parents who have helped with parties, team dinners, team breakfasts and snacks for away meets.  It really is a team effort on the parent’s part as well as the swimmers.

Go EAST!!

Weekly Email:  January 18-23, 2016

Hi Everyone!

REGULAR PRACTICE SCHEDULE TOMORROW, MONDAY 1/18

Congratulations to everyone who participated in the meet at Cedar City!  The team did well, finishing second to Cedar City HS in both the boys and the girls. The girls were solidly in second.  The boys meet was extremely close.  Cedar City HS was first, 2 points ahead of East , and we finished 1 point ahead of Uintah HS (another 4A school).  We had some good races!

Some Information About the Next Couple of Weeks:
The Highland invite on Friday and Saturday 1/22-23 will be REQUIRED for all VARSITY swimmers, and some other relay swimmers.  Everyone else is encouraged to attend, but not required.  It is ok for the JV swimmers to attend only one day, if desired. There will be a bus from East on Friday, but NO BUS on Saturday.  Swimmers in the meet on Saturday will be expected to get to the Fairmont Aquatic Center on their own. Entries are due on TUESDAY 1/19, so swimmers must let me know TOMORROW (Monday) if attending.  There is an entry fee, which the school pays, but I don’t want to pay for swimmers who won’t be there!

The Region Championship Meet on Friday, January 29th is the end of the season for most of our swimmers.  Everyone swims at the Region Championships.  Even though the meet is being held at South Davis Aquatic Center, East is considered the host, and I am the meet director (adding a little extra stress!)  It is the last chance for our swimmers to qualify for the state meet at BYU on Feb 12 and 13!

Weekly Email:  January 10-16, 2016 -- Cedar City Here We Come!

Thank you to the Day, Service and Ledbetter Families for breakfasts and bus snacks last week.

Freshman Fair on Wednesday Jan 13th at 5:30.  The Swim team will have a table.  This is a chance to introduce ourselves to the freshmen-to-be that are at EAST to check out the school.

We are going to NEED some new swimmers  since we have a lot of seniors this year, and even more next year.

Helping at the Freshman Fair COUNTS as a MAKE-UP, so please plan on it!

    This Week:
    • Normal practice schedule.
    • Wednesday, Jan. 13 – Varsity Breakfast provided by Nate Van Buren and Family
    • Wednesday, Jan. 13 -  5:30pm - Freshman Fair - helping at the table is a MAKE-UP credit!
    • Wednesday, Jan. 13 - Last day to pay $30 for ALL swimmers going to Cedar.
    • Friday, Jan 15 – Morning practice 6:00 -7:00 am
    • Friday, Jan. 15 - Cedar City Invite - AWAY MEET – Bus at 8:45 am
      • Friday, Jan. 15 - Bus snacks provided by Connor Rich, Nate Van Buren and Families

    Looking forward to Cedar City:

I have included an itinerary for our trip THIS week!

12 swimmers are NOT going, and do NOT need to pay the $30:

Nicole Blanchard, Madison Dunn, Ally Hopson, Lindsay Lloyd, Nicole Sullivan, Ramsey Fautin, Jojo Lyman, Nick Olsen, Zach Olson, Austin Pratt, Isaac Schiel, Hank Thompson

Everyone else needs to be aware that if the $30 is not paid, it will go on your fines list – even if you have a last-minute change-of-mind.  We have already arranged for hotel rooms, meals, meet fees, and transportation.

This $30, along with fund raising money, pays for rooms, treats, lunch on the bus, meet fees, dinner, transportation and the bus driver.  It does NOT pay for lunch after the meet on Saturday when we plan to go to Cafe Rio.  Bring $10 or $15 with you for lunch.

    Cedar City Check List:
    • Cost: Pay $30 to the EAST Treasurer by Wed. Jan 13th
    • Class: Remember – you will miss classes on Friday Jan 15th (B Day) PLAN ahead!
    • Practice: Keep attendance percentage up
    • Forms: Jared HUNT – we need the Parent Approval form!
Remember to bring warm clothes and something for your feet to wear during the meet.  Performance suffers if you get cold!  The bus does not have room for a lot of extra stuff.  Be reasonable with what you bring.  We will be on a regular school bus.

    Heads up for Next Week:
    • Tuesday, Jan. 19 - Bonneville, East, Ogden @ Ogden - AWAY MEET
      • Bring money ($10-15) we will be stopping for dinner on the way home
