May 20, 2016 - Volunteer Opportunity

36th Annual National Veterans Wheelchair Games - Looking for Volunteers for the Swim Events

Dear Coaches,

My name is Valerie Lambiase, I’m a nurse at the Salt Lake City VA Medical Center and I am the Event Coordinator of the Swimming Events at the Veterans Wheelchair Games which will be hosted in Salt Lake City June 26th through July 2nd.  One of my responsibilities is recruiting volunteers to assist the athletes in and out of the pool, before and after their event.  This will required approximately 40 teams of two and is a specific volunteer opportunity for individuals who are comfortable in the water and are in good physical condition to withstand lifting and lowering athletes of various sizes and with various levels of paralysis.  We hoped that reaching out to the many coaches of high school and college swim teams could assist with this recruiting process, if only to post the volunteer link on a web page or better yet, actively recruit members. Volunteers need to be at least 14 years old.

The swimming events will be held at the indoor and outdoor pools at Steiner on Wednesday, June 29th, with races starting at 6:00 PM, ending by 10:00, if all events run smoothly.  There will be both paraplegic athletes and quadriplegic athletes. These specialized volunteers will work in teams of two, one team at each end of the pool (for the 25 meter events), with one person in the water and one on the deck; each assisting the athlete in or out of the water and back into their chair. We will have physical therapists to train how best to accomplish the task and there will be medical staff on deck throughout all the events should anyone need any assistance, or if the athlete has a problem. There will be certified lifeguards on deck as well.

The link to the volunteer registration is http://wheelchairgames.org/volunteers/.  When registering, please just click on the Swimming Event option to be assigned to my volunteer team.

If anyone has any questions regarding the Games or the actual volunteer responsibilities, please feel free to contact Jacob Bowman at Jacob.bowman@va.gov.  I’ll be out of the country until May 17th but will be happy to answer any questions after that. I can be reached at Valerie.lambiase@va.gov or please feel free to call at 303-548-4026.

Thank you for taking the time to read through this email and consider our request for help.  The Salt Lake VA is very excited to be hosting these Games and thanks to the generous people who are volunteering their time, we are confident we will be able to provide a truly amazing experience for these Veteran wheelchair athletes.

February 27, 2016 - Water Polo!

Hi Everyone!

Are you all rested up, and recovered?

We still don't have a definite date for the banquet, but it looks like it will be in April sometime.

I can't get pool time for one last get together because water polo now has the pool from 3-5 pm every day.

BUT - it is NOT too late to join the water polo team!  Water polo is a nice break from swimming - totally different.  It keeps you in the water and having fun.  Water polo helps your swimming, and swimming helps your water polo.  I'm sure you can just show up at the pool and give it a try, or talk to Meghan or Zach or James or ???  It is an East club team, but has players from other area schools, as well as East.

There was a time when water polo was at least as important in our house as swimming was, and Dane would have rather played polo in college than swam, but there are so few collegiate water polo teams and he isn't 6'10", 300 lbs, and from an Eastern European country.  Still - he had a lot of fun, made good friends, and got to go on a few trips. You should try it!!

Another way, of course, to get a jump ahead for next year is to join a club swimming team.  There are several in the area - Swim Utah, Race Swami, Fish Market, etc.  There are also summer country club teams - JCC, SL Tennis Club, Northcrest, SL Country Club, etc.  You can find more information online for any of these teams.  If you have questions, email, or call me, and I can help direct you to more information.

I hope to see you all soon!  Get in the water!

Cathy

February 15, 2016 -- STATE WRAP-UP

Hello All!

Thank you to everyone, swimmers, and parents, siblings, grandparents, friends, etc, who came to support our team at the state meet! You were a great cheering section. We improved over last year, with the girls placing 9th and the boys 12th. Everyone tried their best. As always, emotions were high with tears, and smiles - sometimes all within a few seconds!  Complete results can be found in the 4A column at utswimcoach.com.  Also down under EAST Swimmers, there is a file for each swimmer with times and results graphed for each meet this year, and, if not a freshman, previous years.

Thank-you to the Day and Wright families for supplying treats and drinks for the swimmers on the deck at State. And, as always, through the entire year, the Swanson family for treats, and yard signs, and banners, and shirts, and going above anything we could hope for.  Also, a huge thanks to the Rainiers for hosting a beautiful state dinner, and helping our state team feel special.

Here are some highlights from the weekend:

We started with the excitement Friday morning of NO BUS, ok, a LATE bus that we shared with Highland, who had NO bus.

Meghan was a STATE CHAMPION in the 200 Free with a 1:54.02, breaking the school record held since 1977 by Robynn Masters!  It was SO fun to see her at the top of the podium.

Of 16 individual swims at the meet - 14 of them were personal best times!  Awesome!

Meghan was 2nd in the 500 free with a 5:07.81.  It was a very tight race!  She smashed the school record  by nearly 3 seconds, held since 2009 by Alina Fong.

Nathan finished 3rd in the 100 Breast with a 1:01.45, which was also a new school record! He broke the record held by Drew Bowles (Alexis' brother) since 2003.  Nathan also finished very well in the 200IM, dropping a lot of time, and shooting
up to 8th.

Jack had a great meet finishing on the podium in 4th in the 200IM, and also scored points in the 500 free, finishing just off the podium in 7th, and just missing the school record.

Katy swam well in the always extremely competitive 100 Free, finishing 9th.  She also scored points in the 100 Back, finishing 12th.

The biggest drop by an East swimmer was by Alex Mayer who snuck into the 500 free, qualifying in 24th place, but dropped over 6 seconds to jump up to 19th place. Way to go Alex!

And Cameron, tried again to break that 1:00 barrier in backstroke, coming in with his umpteenth 1:00.xx, but moving up a place in the standings.

Scoring points in the state meet for the first time were:  Griffin-15th in 100 Back; Madeline-16th in the 500 Free; and Peyton-16th in the 100 Back.  Congrats!!

Relay highlights were the boy's Medley relay of Griffin, Nathan, Jack, and James which finished 8th; and the girl's 400 Free relay of Katy, Madeline, Peyton, and Meghan which ran away with their heat and finished 9th.

Looking ahead:

The banquet for swimmers and their parents will be held after spring break this year - the end of March, or first of April.  We will let you know as soon as we have a date. You don't want to miss it!

I am thinking it would be fun to meet as a team one last time and play capture the flag.  I'll let you know if I can get some pool time in the next two weeks.

Attachments:

I've included two files.
Everyone did a great job, and I am proud of all of you!!

GO EAST!

January 31, 2016 -- Regions and State

Congratulations to EVERYONE, parents and swimmers, both!!!

Everyone was so great!  The region meet, really, could not have come off so well without all the help from parents.  You were so supportive and helpful that I hardly know what to say.  The thanks I owe to Jodie Swanson and Jim VanBuren are beyond what I even know how to express.  I could not have done it without you.  There was a hiccup here and there, but the meet was held, and the kids swam great, and we shouldn’t have to do that again for a while!!  THANK-YOU!

Swimmers!!  You were amazing!  Almost everyone on the team had at least one best time.  Some dropped huge chunks of time.  It was so fun to see the red EAST caps out in front!  We won 4 events!  Meghan won the 200 and 500 free, with a new Region V record in the 500 free.  Jack blew the field away in the 200 IM, and Katy somehow got her hand on the wall first to win the 100 free.

The Top 50 is finally up, and I have gone through to estimate state qualifiers.  The GOOD news that I am certain of – ALL relays are IN!!!  That makes me so happy, and proud of you!  We haven’t had all relays in for several years. Individual entries are more difficult to determine.  State entries are due on Wednesday.  After they are processed, they come back to me with who has gotten in.  Here is a list of who I think is in, and who is on the bubble.
  • Meghan – multiple events
  • Jack – multiple events
  • Katy – multiple events
  • Nate – Breast, probably in IM, and on the bubble in the 50 FR
  • Griffin – Back, and on the bubble for IM
  • Madeline – probably in 500 FR
  • Peyton – probably in back
  • Alex – probably in 200 FR
  • James – probably in 100 FR
  • Cam – on the bubble for both fly and back

Practice this week will be a normal schedule for the above swimmers.

Tomorrow morning 7 am, Monday: Meghan, Jack, Katy, Griffin, Madeline, Alex.
Tomorrow afternoon 3 pm: Meghan, Jack, Katy, Griffin, Madeline, Alex, Nate, Peyton, James, Cam.

Also tomorrow afternoon: Jared, Noah, Zach, Maddie, Chloe, Kanna, & Jamie
.  These swimmers may be on relays or alternates.

Everyone else on the team is welcome to come to afternoon practices this week, 3-4 pm, if you want to.

I will send out some more details about the upcoming week, and region results, in another email.

The State meet is Feb 12 & 13th.  More info will be coming about that too!

GO EAST!

Weekly Email:  January 25-29, 2016 -- UPDATE

As if that email wasn't long enough - I forgot a few things!

1st - Peyton is also very close to qualifying for state.  Anything can happen at the region meets! Yikes.

2nd - I forgot to include a couple of pictures from the Highland Invite - take a look!

3rd - I wanted to report on the meets last week:

At the Ogden Invite, it was fun to swim in a new pool, and win so easily. It was a confidence booster.

It was scored as 2 dual meets.  Both of these teams are in our region.

Boys:
  • EAST 130 Ogden 36
  • EAST 117 Bonneville 57
Girls:
  • EAST 122 Ogden 46
  • EAST 110 Bonneville 60

At the Highland Invite, the competition was a little stiffer, with some 5A schools.
  • Boys:  EAST was 5th of 11 teams
  • Girls:  EAST was 6th of 10 teams
  • Combined: EAST was 5th of 11 teams
The swimmers of the meet at the Cedar Invitational were:
Emma Robinson for getting in there with her injury and still swimming

Adam Oveido for driving down to Cedar on his own (with his Dad) even though he was sick, so he could participate on the 2nd day.

Thank you Emma and Adam for being great team members!

The swimmers of the meet at the Ogden meet were:
Ian Ashworth for dropping bunches of time in both of his events:  200 Free -6.89 seconds and the 100 Free -1.39 seconds!

Allison Buhler for dropping time in both of her events AGAIN: 100 Fly -1.88 seconds and the 100 Back -.8 seconds!
Congratulations Ian and Allison!

Take a look at the 4A  top50 (utswimcoach.com) to see where the East swimmers are placed.  Unfortunately, the Highland invite is not included in there, but it still gives a good idea of what the 4A competition is. Pretty tough.

Hang in there everyone!

Weekly Email:  January 25-29, 2016 -- Get Excited for Regions!

Hello Again Everyone –

Our swim season is nearing the end.  This week we will be resting up for the REGION MEET on Friday.  There are some changes to the workouts:
  • MONDAY – Both practices will be held at the usual time but EVERYONE attends only ONE – except Katy, Jack and Meghan are expected at BOTH, AND those who need a make-up to swim at region:  Julius, Zach, Dylan, Hank & Mae
  • TUESDAY is normal
  • WEDNESDAY morning – ONLY Katy, Meghan & Jack
  • WEDNESDAY afternoon – EVERYONE – Swimming, including relay practice, and then a TEAM meeting
  • THURSDAY is normal
  • FRIDAY – no practice, REGION MEET!!
Attendance at practice was pretty dismal last week, leaving several of you off the list of team members in good standing. Only swimmers in good standing are allowed to participate in region and invited to the region dinner. Entries are due on TUESDAY.  There is exactly ONE make-up opportunity (come twice on Monday).

Swimmers eligible for region (85% attendance and above)

Girls:  Allison, Kanna, Maddie, Lauren, Sammy, Ally, Madeline, Busra, Peyton, Jamie, Katy, Chloe, Abbey, Meghan, Jessie, Mary, Eleanor.  Mae needs either a make-up, or doctor’s note for missing last week. Stephanie, Emma, and Madison cannot swim at region because of injury or the UHSAA, but ARE invited to the region dinner

Boys: Ian, Noah, Daxton, Rob, Griffin, Jesper, Jared, Oskar, Jackson, Alex, Adam, Connor, Jack, James, Nathan, Cameron.  Need a make-up to be included: Julius, Zach, Dylan, Hank

If you believe you name has been left off this list in error, please come talk to me in person.

The 4A Region 5 Championship meet is on Friday.  The bus is scheduled to leave East at  7:15am.  Swimmers will be excused from school for the full school day.  East's warm-up is from 8:10-8:50 am.  The meet starts at 9 am.  There is an admission fee for spectators ($6 adults, $4 students, $20 family, under 5 and over 62 are free).  Programs can be purchased for $4.

Things are looking pretty good for our volunteer positions at regions.  We are still in need of someone to help at the entrance table by stamping hands as spectators enter the meet as they pay for their entrance fee.  This volunteer should only be needed until the meet starts when everyone is trying to arrive at the same time.  Please email Jodie (snjswanson@msn.com) if you can help.

For most swimmers, the region meet is the end of the season.  Those who qualify for state, including relay swimmers and alternates will continue, but that is not a sure thing until state entries have been turned in and times are accepted which will become more clear next weekend.

At this time probable individual qualifiers include:  Katy, Meghan, Madeline(?), Jack, Nate, Alex(?), Griffin(?)

Relays look like:  All 3 girls relays, and at least 2 boys relays.  This will increase the state swimmers significantly.

Waiting for state entry validation is a nerve wracking time for these swimmers and coaches!

Thank you to everyone that is helping with the region meet!
